Managing your potato business

Managing your business

To be successful in Potato farming;

  • Keep good potato records to help you manage it well. Records help you see where the money is coming from and going to. Do not mix or use business funds for personal needs. Open a business savings account to keep money safe for when it is needed. Make sure you pay back your loans on time and stick to your money plans.
  • Join a farmers group to work with other Potatoes farmers for better knowledge and fairer Potatoes prices.
  • Get a KEBS certificate to sell Potatoes to supermarkets and big buyers that make Potatoes products such as crisps.
  • Contract growing: find a potato buyer before planting and arrange for them to buy your potatoes when you harvest. Find out how much the buyer wants to buy. This will tell you with packaging.
  • Invest your profits back into the business to ensure that it grows. Don’t use business money for yourself. The business should pay you a salary. Use that for yourself.
  • From the profits you get, start another business, such as a chicken farm. This gives you security if one of your crop has issues or fails.
